The brine fly is a species of fly found on the Mediterranean Salt Flat of 5 million AD. They are the only animals inhabiting lakes and brine pools, where they feed on the halophilic bacteria and algae. These flies provide a source of food and hydration for the cryptile, the only vertebrate existing on the salt.

Ecology[]

Cryptiles are obligate insectivores which feed exclusively on and obtain all of their nourishment from brineflies, which are too populous for even extensive predation to have any effect on their numbers. These flies congregate around the shores of hypersaline lakes and brine ponds, which are necessarily the hunting grounds of cryptiles. The cryptile has evolved a specialised hunting method for catching large numbers of very small prey items: it "trawls" for its prey by sprinting bipedally through a thick swarm of flies with its frill erected. A large number of the flies will become adhered to the sticky coating of the cryptile's frill, allowing it to use its prehensile tongue to lick them off.
